Plan for Senate Bid

Caligiuri To Seek 16th District Seat

By ROBERTO GONZALEZ | Courant Staff Writer 11/30/2005

Southington - Republican Sam Caligiuri, former acting mayor of Waterbury, plans today to announce his intention to run for the 16th Senate District in the 2006 elections.

The 16th Senate District covers parts of Waterbury and Cheshire and all of Wolcott and Southington.

Democratic state Sen. Christopher Murphy, who is running for U.S. Congress against Rep. Nancy Johnson, R-5th District, is vacating a seat.

“I want to run because I don’t like the direction I see the state is going, at least in the General Assembly,” Caligiuri said Tuesday. “The legislature is not being fiscally responsible and [is] spending a lot of money. It seems to think that raising taxes is the only answer. To me, that’s a recipe for disaster.”

Caligiuri, 39, was the Republican president of the Waterbury Board of Aldermen when he became acting mayor following the arrest of Mayor Philip Giordano on child sex charges in July 2001.

Caligiuri, a Waterbury native, served as acting mayor until Jan. 1, 2002, when Michael Jarjura was sworn in after wining election in November 2001.

During Caligiuri’s brief term, he helped reform Waterbury’s patronage-based system for awarding towing contracts, by making contractors classified civil servants rather than political appointees, and he negotiated two collective bargaining agreements.

"I've been the chief executive of a community, and I think it's very important a representative knows how to run a government," Caligiuri said. "I will be sensitive to the needs of residents in Cheshire, Waterbury, Wolcott and Southington."

Gov. M. Jodi Rell recently picked Caligiuri to serve on the newly formed Commission on Education Finance, which will review the state’s current formulas for school funding.

“Sam Caligiuri is exactly the sort of person we need in Hartford,” Rell said in a press release.

Caligiuri is an attorney in the Hartford office of Day, Berry & Howard, focusing on public finance and financial service matters.

He still lives in Waterbury with his wife, Lori, and their two children, Grace and Owen.
