DEMOCRAT ZONI CAUGHT USING PUSH POLLING AGAINST REPUBLICAN SAM CALIGIURI
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE July 26, 2006 DEMOCRAT ZONI CAUGHT USING PUSH POLLING AGAINST REPUBLICAN SAM CALIGIURI Democrat state senate candidate David Zoni and his supporters are using push polling against Republican Party nominee Sam Caligiuri. Push polling is designed to deliver untruthful negative messages to voters under the guise of a legitimate polling operation. The purpose of the poll is try to push voters away from a candidate they would normally support by injecting the poll questions with negative information. It is considered one of the most under handed and disreputable persuasion techniques used in modern campaigns. “Sam Caligiuri has been running a positive campaign since the beginning of the year and his campaign is winning support throughout the district,” said Caligiuri’s campaign manager Lana Ogrodnik. “To think that Dave Zoni would stoop to this level as the first step in his campaign is shameful. It shows he has no experience, no record and no issues to run on. The foundation of his campaign is deceiving the voters.” Tuesday evening July 25, Southington Republican John Nugent received a random call from a man who identified himself as an employee of a polling firm based in North Dakota. The questions began normally, but when Nugent revealed he intended to support Caligiuri in the upcoming election the questions took a different turn. “He started asking questions that I knew were a distortion of Sam’s record as mayor of Waterbury,” Nugent said. “One question was, ‘did you know Sam spent the city into bankruptcy?’ That is so far from the truth it’s a joke. Sam helped get the city back on its feet as Board of Aldermen President and as Acting Mayor. The questions got worse from there.” “I am going to stay focused on the issues the people of this district care about. I am disappointed to say the least that Dave is taking this approach,” Sam Caligiuri said. Caligiuri is a law partner in the Hartford office of Day, Berry and Howard. He served as President of the Waterbury Board of Aldermen and as Acting Mayor of Waterbury. He is running for state senate to bring fiscal responsibility to state government, improve education, job opportunities and energy policies.
